New Zealand Wool Duvet

Sleep runs on temperature. Your body lowers its own to fall asleep, and the range it needs to stay in is narrow. A sheep solved that problem long before anyone thought to make bedding out of it.
Wool absorbs up to a third of its own weight in moisture without ever feeling damp, then gives it back to the air. Taking moisture on warms it a little. Giving it back cools it a little. So the temperature under the duvet gets nudged back instead of swinging. That is what temperature regulation means. Down manages under a tenth of its weight. Polyester, under one percent, does none of it.
Ours is New Zealand strong wool from Tairāwhiti Gisborne, needle-punched into one continuous fleece rather than blown in loose. It drapes evenly across the bed and stays where it is put. Pure wool and nothing but. No antibacterial finish, no biocide, no flame retardant, because wool has never needed them.

Start with the 200gsm. It is the year-round duvet. It carries most bedrooms through spring, summer and autumn on its own, and on the coldest nights a blanket over the top closes the gap. It is our most ordered weight.
The choice is not symmetrical, which is why we point most people here. A duvet that turns out too light is fixed with a blanket. A duvet that turns out too warm cannot be made lighter.
Add the 350gsm when you want to do it properly. Swap them over as the seasons turn, the 200gsm from spring to autumn and the 350gsm through winter. When it turns genuinely cold, tie the two together with the reinforced corner loops for 550gsm of wool. Two duvets in one order saves 15%.
Go straight to the 350gsm if you sleep cold, or if you simply like more weight on you.
Sharing with someone who runs colder than you? Keep the 200gsm and let them add a layer on their side. That is easier to live with than making the warmer sleeper too hot.

Most sizes are shared across both countries, but not at the top of the range. An Australian King bed takes our King. An Australian Super King bed is 203 x 203cm and takes our Australian Super King at 270 x 235cm. Our NZ Super King and Californian King are New Zealand sizes and are not cut for an Australian Super King bed.

Nothing is applied to the fill. No antibacterial finish, no biocide, no flame retardant.
Pure wool does not like to be roughed up or heated while wet. Regular airing keeps it fresh and reduces how often it needs washing.
Machine washable in a front loader, or a top loader with no agitator, on a COLD delicate or wool cycle, using wool detergent.
Dry naturally. If needed, finish in a tumble dryer on no heat. It can be ironed warm. Gently stretch the fibres as you go to help guard against shrinkage.
You may notice traces of natural vegetable matter such as grass, straw or thistle in the wool. Some makes it through the double-scouring wash. It softens with use and is a sign of how little is done to the wool.

How This Duvet Gets Made
Grown in Tairāwhiti Gisborne
The wool comes from more than 250 partner farming families on New Zealand's East Coast, all working to New Zealand Farm Assurance Programme standards. The region's warm maritime climate grows strong wool with almost no plant matter in it, which is why the next step needs no chemistry. Wisewool's family have been grading wool here since 1894.
Cleaned and Needle-Punched
Most wool used in bedding is chemically carbonised to burn out plant matter, scoured with harsh detergents, or bonded with synthetic resins to hold its shape. Ours goes through none of that. It is washed gently, without chemicals, then needle-punched into blanketing at the Wisewool factory at Te Poi.
The inside
A Fabric, Not A Filling
Most wool duvets are filled with loose wool, blown in and quilted into pockets to hold it roughly in place. Ours is not.
Wisewool™ blanketing is made by punching millions of barbed needles through stacked sheets of wool until the fibres lock into each other. What comes out is a single sheet of wool that holds its own shape.
That is why the duvet lies flat. There is nothing loose inside it to migrate to one end, clump in a corner, or leave a thin patch where the warmth should be. It is also why grams per square metre tells you so little about how warm a duvet will be.
The wool sits inside a 300TC cotton lining, and every duvet has reinforced cotton loops at the corners so it stays tied where it should be.

Wisewool sends its wool to independent laboratories rather than making claims about it. Three results matter for a duvet, and each one was run to a named international standard.

Nothing found that should not be there
Wool is farmed, and farmed fibre can carry pesticide residue. So it gets tested for it, across every category the standard covers.
Nothing was detectable. The same result came back for certified organic wool tested at the same time.
Why it matters. When we say nothing is added to the wool, this is the part that is checkable. No antibacterial finish, no biocide, no flame retardant, and nothing left over from the farm either.

Squashed 80,000 times, and it came back
A machine drops a weighted foot onto the material 80,000 times, then leaves it six hours to recover. Furniture makers use it to find out whether a cushion will sag in three years, without waiting three years.
The needle-punched wool came back with about 95% of its thickness. The polyester lost far more, and did not recover it.
Why it matters. Warmth comes from air trapped between the fibres, not from the fibres themselves. A filling that flattens for good is a duvet that gets colder every year while looking much the same. That is what people mean when a duvet has gone flat.

It would not catch, so nothing had to be added
A flame and a smouldering cigarette are held against a mock-up of filling and cover, then taken away, and the testers watch what happens next.
The wool showed no smouldering and no flaming at any stage. Polyester fill and foam chips tested alongside it failed, with what the laboratory called unsafe, escalating combustion.
Why it matters. Synthetic fillings often need flame-retardant chemicals to behave this way. Wool does not. So nothing added to the wool is not a step we skipped. It is a step the material never needed.

The Same Wool, Under Your Head
The duvet uses Wisewool™ as a single sheet. The New Zealand Wool Pillow uses the same wool engineered the other way, into a springy loose fill.
It arrives with more fill than most people need. Take some out until the height is right, keep what you removed, and put it back as the pillow settles. Most pillows give you one height and you either get on with it or you do not.
Same farms, same testing, same nothing added to it. If untreated wool is worth having over you, it is worth having under your head, where your face is against it all night.

Having been an avid outdoor enthusiast I know the benefits of wool activewear, namely warmth, outstanding temperature regulation and odour resistant. Equally, goose down offers superior warmth to weight (and compressibility) for sleeping bags in cold climates. So I had my doubts on whether a 350gsm winter weight wool duvet inner could compete with my 90/10 goose down duvet inner. I became more concerned when the Kindface duvet arrived and I swapped the inners over given the significant difference in loft. However, tested on the coldest of Invercargill nights the wool duvet inner outperformed the goose down. The wool duvet also created pockets of warm air allowing for freedom of movement on cold nights without fear of stretching out into a cold area. This duvet really does change the feeling of being warm and I still can't get over how something so "flat-looking" can outperform my best goose-down duvet.

I did extensive research into all the wool duvet offerings on the market in New Zealand and Wise Wool's needle punched blanketing, that Kind Face use in their duvets, came out on top - such a clever concept to have a duvet filled with wool blanketing that won't shift or clump. The quality of the duvet that Kind Face produce is exceptional - from the wool filling and the crisp cotton cover down to the the stitching and finished edges. It was important to have a duvet that I could wash without worrying that it would lose it's integrity.

The 200gsm is the year-round duvet. It carries most bedrooms through spring, summer and autumn on its own, and on the coldest nights a blanket over the top closes the gap. For most people that is the whole answer.
If you want to do it properly, add the 350gsm. Swap them over as the seasons turn, the 200gsm from spring to autumn and the 350gsm through winter. Two duvets in one order saves 15%.
And when it turns genuinely cold, tie them together. Every duvet has reinforced cotton loops at all four corners, so the two become a single 550gsm duvet for the handful of nights that need it. Most people never use it. It is there for the week or two a year that does.
This is the most common surprise, and it comes from comparing ours to a loose-filled duvet. Loose fill is puffy because it is full of air pockets that have not settled yet. Ours is a single compressed sheet, so it looks flatter from the moment you open it and it stays that way.
One of our customers swapped a 90/10 goose down inner for a 350gsm and said the difference in loft worried him. Tested on the coldest Invercargill nights, he found the wool outperformed the down.
Loft you can see is not the same as warmth you can feel, and loft that settles in six months was never warmth to begin with.
Grams per square metre is the only number most wool duvets publish, so it becomes the number people compare. It tells you how much wool is in the duvet. It does not tell you how much air that wool holds, how evenly it holds it across the whole duvet, or whether it will still be holding it in five years.
Ours is needle-punched into a single bonded sheet rather than blown in as loose fill, which is why it lies flat and keeps its loft. A heavier duvet is not automatically a warmer one, and it is certainly not a longer-lasting one.
Because of what is in it and where it is made. The wool is New Zealand strong wool from named farms in Gisborne, mechanically processed with no chemical carbonising, no resin bonding and no flame retardant. Then every duvet is cut, filled and finished by hand in our Auckland workroom, not in a factory overseas.
There are cheaper wool quilts and there is nothing wrong with buying one. What you generally get for less is commodity wool of unknown origin, loose fill that settles, and a chemical treatment somewhere in the process.
Our duvets are cut to standard New Zealand sizes, and we make the Australian Super King at 270 x 235cm as well. A cover bought in either country will fit the matching size.

No, because you are never in contact with it. The wool is fully enclosed inside a 300TC cotton lining, so what touches you is cotton. Wool blankets itch because the fibre is against your skin. This is not that.
The lining is certified STANDARD 100 by OEKO-TEX®, which means an independent laboratory has tested the fabric for harmful substances. And nothing is applied to the wool itself. No antibacterial finish, no biocide, no flame retardant. Independent residue testing came back with nothing detectable.
We will not tell you wool is hypoallergenic, because that word means very little and nobody can substantiate it. What we can tell you is exactly what is in this duvet and what is not, which is a better basis for a decision if you react to things.
Some people notice a faint wool scent when it is new. It fades within a week or two, and some people like it.
What it will not do is smell of chemistry, because nothing was applied to it. Wool holds onto odour compounds rather than letting them sit in the air, which is why airing a duvet freshens it and why it needs washing far less often than people expect. A few hours outside does more than a wash.
Yes, and you should not need to often. Wash cold on a delicate or wool cycle in a front loader, or a top loader with no agitator, using wool detergent. Dry naturally.
Heat and agitation are what wool dislikes. Keep both gentle and it will stay in good condition. Full care instructions are in the panel above.
Air it for a few hours, make sure it is completely dry, and store it somewhere that breathes. The calico bag it arrives in is ideal. Do not use a plastic vacuum bag, which traps moisture and crushes the loft.
Moths are attracted to wool that is soiled rather than clean wool, so wash or air it before it goes away, and check on it once during the season. Cedar or lavender works if you want it. Mothballs are unnecessary and they will make the duvet smell.
Yes. Use the corner loops and something simple from around the house, like yarn or ribbon.
This is what people who buy both weights do. The 200gsm on its own through summer, the 350gsm on its own through most of winter, and the two tied together for the coldest weeks. We would not go heavier than a 200gsm and a 350gsm together.
