Welcome to New Zealand’s home of sleep. We handcraft the natural wool essentials no one makes better, and curate the rest from partners who share our obsession - saving you the trial and error.

You will love Baksana's crisp, cool, and matte 500-thread-count percale sheets & pillowcases. Woven from long-staple combed organic cotton by GOTS-certified master weavers in India, and finished with a classic hemstitch border

Pure, luxurious breathability, engineered to work as an integrated system with our New Zealand wool pillows, toppers, and duvets.

Percale uses an authentic one-over, one-under weave that feels dry and fresh to slide into, softening naturally wash after wash without losing its structure or pilling. It is perfect for those who sleep warm or prefer a light, tailored hotel finish over a slippery sateen.

Both the flat sheets and pillowcases feature a refined hemstitch detail. The fitted sheets are tailored with an exceptionally deep 50cm drop, tucking easily beneath deep mattresses without snapping off at night.

Fitted sheet goes over the mattress. Flat sheet goes between you and your duvet. Pillowcases are chosen by pillow size and your preferred style.

Important Notes:

  • Never pay for sheets or pillowcases you won’t use. Don't pay for a flat sheet if you only sleep under a duvet. Match your deep fitted sheet with Lodge, Euro, or Oxford pillowcases seamlessly. Choose the exact separates you want, skip what you don’t, and automatically save 15% when you assemble two or more pieces (discount applies automatically at checkout).
  • We hope you have chosen our beautiful New Zealand wool pillows, duvet and mattress topper 😁

The Weave: Percale vs Sateen

Luxury bedding has defaulted to sateen because it looks and feels glossy. But, from our testing there was only one clear winner.

01

Percale ✔️

We chose percale. Percale is woven in an exacting one-over, one-under grid. The result is a matte, crisp feel reminiscent of five-star hotels. Cool when you slip into bed, breathable through the night, and naturally resistant to pilling. It does not cling to you; it floats over you.

02

Sateen ❌

Sateen achieves its slick look by floating several threads over a single cross yarn, exposing long runs of loose fibre to the surface. While silky at first touch, this structure traps body heat, limits airflow, and tends to cling rather than breathe. Over time, those exposed threads easily snag, fuzz, and pill in the wash.

The Reality of Thread Count

Bedding marketing turned thread count into an arms race, twisting flimsy, multi-ply threads together to claim counts of 800 or 1,200. High numbers like that choke airflow, creating dense fabric that traps body heat and degrades quickly. Baksana’s 500 thread count represents the honest ceiling of single-ply organic cotton weaving, using genuine long-staple cotton spun into fine, strong single yarns. At 500TC, the fabric achieves an optimal density: substantial enough to drape with quiet weight, yet porous enough to let your body breathe freely.

Why We Choose Baksana

Why We Choose Baksana

We craft the sleep essentials no one does better (in our own humble opinion), and curate the rest from New Zealand partners who share our obsession.

Baksana is a New Zealand bedding house that has dressed luxury hotel beds (and homes) since 1987. We make our own sleep essentials by hand because we refuse to compromise on how wool performs, and we apply that exact same standard to everything else that touches your bed.

Baksana earned their place on our site for three reasons:

  1. Shared Family Values  - A fellow family business built on long-term relationships, fair practice, and genuine pride in the trade.
  2. Trust - Authentic GOTS-certified organic cotton and proven product performance.
  3. Uncompromising Craftsmanship - They don’t cut corners on depth, finish, yarn quality and craftsmanship - and neither do we.

Complete the bed

Cotton next to your skin. New Zealand wool all around you.

Cotton next to your skin. New Zealand wool all around you.

A natural sleep experience performs only as well as its layers work together. If you wrap natural wool in synthetics or dense, coated fabrics, you choke the airflow.

We selected Baksana’s 500TC organic percale specifically to complement our pure New Zealand wool range:

  • New Zealand Wool Duvet - Percale’s open, breathable grid allows heat and humidity to pass seamlessly into the Wisewool™ fleece, keeping your sleep microclimate balanced all night.
  • New Zealand Wool Pillow - Clean, crisp percale provides a cool, smooth surface against your skin while letting the natural loft and airflow of pure wool breathe freely.
  • New Zealand Wool Mattress Topper - The 50cm deep-drop fitted wall slips effortlessly over your deepest mattress and topper combination, staying anchored without pulling free or crushing the wool loft.

Build your sleep system and save.

Add Baksana sheets or pillowcases alongside any Do Not Disturb wool essential, and an automatic 15% discount will apply at checkout.

FAQ

This is the great domestic divide, and we take no sides in relationship disputes.

The fitted sheet is non-negotiable. Mattresses are meant to be slept on, not wrestled into raw contact. But the flat sheet? Purely personal philosophy.

If you grew up with hospital corners and love the neat, tucked-in ritual of peeling back a crisp cuff with classic hemstitching, take the flat sheet. If you view a top sheet as an overnight ankle trap designed purely to bunch up at the foot of your bed while your wool duvet does the heavy lifting, skip it entirely.

That is precisely why we sell everything as separates: take what completes your sleep ritual, leave the cupboard clutter behind, and save 15% when you assemble two or more pieces anyway.

It comes down to breathability and structure. Sateen exposes long floats of yarn to achieve a glossy finish, but that surface clings to the body and traps heat.

Percale uses an exacting one-under, one-over grid. The result is a matte, crisp hand feel that floats over your skin rather than sticking to it. It stays naturally cool upon entry, breathes cleanly through the night, and resists pilling over years of laundering.

Yes. Baksana 500TC organic sheets are made from 100% GOTS-certified (Global Organic Textile Standard) organic cotton and woven in southern India by a GOTS-certified mill.

From the raw cotton field to the finished seam, no toxic pesticides, harsh chemical bleaches, or synthetic softening coatings are used.

Crafted in Tamil Nadu, Southern India - a region renowned globally for master weaving long-staple organic cotton.

In a neat twist of textile fate, Baksana have these sheets handcrafted at the exact same GOTS-certified mill we selected to produce our own organic cotton outer casings for our duvets and pillows (our maiden shipment arrives November 2026).

When two separate Kiwi companies obsessing over ethical farming and yarn quality independently arrive at the identical workroom half a world away, you know it was meant to be!

Without a wrestling match at midnight, yes.

Most fitted sheets top out at a 35cm or 40cm drop, which means the moment you add a topper (hopefully it is our New Zealand wool topper), the corners pull taut, ride up, and inevitably catapult off the mattress while you sleep.

Baksana designed these with a generous 50cm deep-drop wall and finished them with thick, continuous elastic all the way around. They slip effortlessly over your deepest mattress and wool topper combined, tuck cleanly underneath, and actually stay there until you decide it is laundry day.

Yes - and that is honest proof of what is not on your bed.

Pure, unadulterated organic cotton naturally wrinkles when washed. The only sheets that emerge from a dryer unnaturally glassy and crease-free are either blended with polyester or bathed in chemical anti-wrinkle resin baths (typically formaldehyde derivatives). We will not sleep under that, and we certainly will not recommend it for your home.

Percale’s crisp, relaxed texture settles into soft, gentle waves on the bed after a night or two of sleeping on it. If you love a razor-sharp, five-star hotel finish, give them a warm iron while they are still slightly damp or hang them out on a breezy line. If you prefer to live your life, shake them out straight from the machine, pull them taut over the bed, and let natural living take care of the rest.

Gently, simply, and without the chemical warfare.

Pop them in a front loader (or a top loader without a central agitator) preferably on a cold gentle cycle using a mild, eco-friendly liquid detergent. Skip the fabric softeners and optical brighteners - organic cotton has its own natural softness, and synthetic coaters only clog the weave and ruin the breathability you bought them for.

For drying, the clothesline in fresh air and sunshine is gold standard; the breeze naturally relaxes the fibres and leaves that clean, sun-warmed scent. If the weather refuses to cooperate, tumble dry on a low, delicate setting and pull them out while they are still just a tiny bit damp to keep creasing to a minimum.

Wash, line dry, make the bed, repeat - and watch them get softer with every single spin.

You will want Lodge Pillowcases (50 x 90cm) - standard covers will leave your pillows spilling out the sides like over-proved bread dough.

Yes, immediately and automatically.

No scratch-off codes, no secret handshakes, and no hunting through marketing emails at checkout. The moment any two eligible items land in your cart, our system shaves 15% off both.

Because we sell our bedding strictly as separates, the math works however you sleep:

  • Pair a fitted sheet with a set of pillowcases? 15% off.
  • Add a flat sheet to your fitted sheet? 15% off.
  • Combine a sheet with our New Zealand Wool Duvet, Pillow, or Mattress Topper? 15% off across the lot.

Build the exact bed you want, leave behind the pieces you will never use, and let the cart do the math for you.

Wash them, sleep on them, and see how your body feels for up to 30 nights.

Buying bedding online shouldn’t feel like a leap of faith. If the crispness of our 500TC organic percale isn't delivering your best sleep, or if the fit simply isn’t what you hoped for, send them back to our Auckland base for a full product refund (less original shipping costs).

No passive-aggressive interrogation, no hoops to jump through - just our quiet guarantee that your sleep always comes first.
