A pillow spray with six ingredients. Four essential oils, distilled water and denatured ethanol. Nothing else. Blended and bottled by hand in our Auckland workroom.

New Zealand lavender leads it. True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, grown spray-free in Canterbury by a single grower. Cedarwood underneath stops it reading sweet. Jasmine and chamomile are the notes on top.

Shake it well, then two or three sprays across your pillow. Available in 30ml and 100ml, in recyclable UV-protective black glass.

Your New Evening Ritual:

  1. Shake it properly. There is no solubiliser in this bottle, so the oils sit on top between uses. A firm shake is what gets them into the spray.
  2. Mist lightly onto your pillow and bedding from about 20cm.
  3. Then go to bed. The point is the repetition, not the dose.

Safety: For external use only. Avoid eyes and keep out of reach of children. Should any irritation occur, we recommend discontinuing use.

New Zealand lavender leads the blend. True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, grown spray-free in Canterbury and distilled here. Most brands will tell you the country. We can tell you the region, the growing method and the species, because we buy from one grower rather than from a broker.

Cedarwood grounds it. The base note. Warm and dry, it sits underneath the lavender and stops the blend reading as sweet.

Jasmine and chamomile are the notes on top. They soften the opening and they are what lingers. They are present in small amounts.

Carrier: distilled water and denatured ethanol. Vessel: UV-protective black glass, recyclable, with a fine mist spray cap.

Available in 30ml and 100ml.

The 100ml is the better value per millilitre and the size we would point most people to. The 30ml is sized for travel, for a bedside drawer, or for giving.

How it works

Not a sedative. A signal.

Botanical sleep mist ingredients featuring premium New Zealand lavender, jasmine, chamomile and grounding cedarwood oils.

This will not knock you out. It is not supposed to. It is for getting there.

So use it the same way every night. Same scent, same point in the evening, last thing before the light goes off.

You already do this without noticing. Dimming the lights. Getting into bed. This is the one you choose.

Repetition is the active ingredient.

Ingredients

Six things, and the reason for each

What is in it

New Zealand lavender
True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, grown spray-free in Canterbury.
Cedarwood
The base note. Warm and dry, it stops the blend reading as sweet.
Jasmine
Softens the opening. Present in a small amount, because that is what a note is.
Roman chamomile
The other note. Also small, for the same reason.
Distilled water
The bulk of it.
Denatured ethanol
Carries the oils and lets the mist dry rather than sit wet on your pillow.

What is not in it

A solubiliser
Sleep sprays almost always include one, to hold the oils and the water together. We left it out, which is the reason you have to shake the bottle.
Added preservative
The alcohol does that job.
Colour
There is nothing to improve.

How this bottle gets made

Woman's Hand in a Field of Lavenders
01  THE FIELD

Grown in Canterbury

True lavender, Lavandula angustifolia, grown spray-free in Canterbury and distilled in New Zealand. Cool-climate growing makes for a softer, rounder oil, without the sharp medicinal edge that cheaper lavender carries.

Pure botanical ingredients including New Zealand lavender and chamomile used in the calming sleep mist blend.
02  THE BLEND

Four oils, water, alcohol

That is the entire formula. No synthetic fragrance, no added preservative, nothing to stop it separating. Blended in small batches so we can keep the list that short.

Filled by hand in Auckland

Every bottle is filled, capped and labelled by us. Visit us any weekday, or see us at work on our Instagram.

Goes with

The other half of the routine

Sleep mask and bottle of sleep mist with 'Do Not Disturb' text on a wooden surface.

Darkness and scent are two cues, and they work better arriving together than apart.

The Linen & Wisewool™ Sleep Mask is deliberately unscented, so the mist is how you add a scent and you decide how much. Mist the linen outer lightly and let it dry before you put it on.

The Weighted Eye Mask already has dried lavender through the fill, so with that one we would mist the pillow instead.

FAQ

Not on its own, and we would rather say that plainly. It is not a sedative and it does not act on you chemically. What it does is give your body a consistent cue at the point in the evening where you want to be winding down.

The people who get the most out of it use it the same way every night. The ones expecting it to knock them out are usually disappointed.

Because there is nothing in it to stop the oils separating from the water. Sleep sprays almost always include a solubiliser that holds everything in suspension. We left it out.

The trade-off is that the oils float, and the straw draws from the bottom, so an unshaken bottle gives you a weaker spray rather than a stronger one. A firm shake fixes it.

Light. Noticeable when you put your head down, largely gone from your conscious attention within a few minutes.

That is deliberate, and for two reasons. A pillow spray sits against your skin for eight hours, so it belongs in a lighter category than something you spray into the air and walk away from.

The second reason is more interesting. Research on scent and the nervous system has found the calming effect depends on whether you like the smell. At low intensity, a scent settles most people either way. Turned up, a scent someone dislikes does the opposite of settling them. A light hand is not us being mean with the oils. It is the setting that works for the most people.

You will notice it through getting into bed and settling. Cedarwood and jasmine are the notes that linger longest.

Once you are asleep, you are not smelling much of anything. That is how the human nose works in deep sleep, and it is the reason a bedroom scent does not disturb you.

Here is the honest answer, because we would rather you had it than a reassuring one.

Children. Lavender is one of the few essential oils specifically studied for use around children, and paediatric guidance supports it from age three. Below three there is not enough research for us to make a claim, so we do not make one. Mist the pillow before bedtime and let it settle rather than spraying near a child.

Dogs. Ambient use around dogs is widely considered fine. Spray the bed before you get in, not while your dog is lying on it.

Cats. Cats process certain plant compounds differently to us, and veterinary bodies advise caution with essential oils around them. There is no evidence that a lightly misted pillow harms a cat, and there is no research establishing that it is safe either. Our recommendation: mist the bed and let it dry before your cat settles on it, keep the room ventilated, and give your cat a way out of the room. If your cat sleeps on your pillow, we would rather you skipped the mist than took our word for it.

Full ingredients are listed further up this page. If your vet wants the detail, send them our way.

On everyday linen, cotton and wool, no. The mist is fine and there is very little oil in it.

On delicate, vintage or very pale fabric, patch test an edge first. Any oil-bearing product on a natural fibre deserves that much care.

Yes. With the Linen & Wisewool™ Sleep Mask, mist the linen outer lightly and let it dry before you put it on. That mask is unscented for exactly this reason.

The Weighted Eye Mask already carries dried lavender through the fill, so with that one we would mist the pillow instead.

By us, by hand, in our Auckland workroom. Each batch is blended and bottled in house so we can protect the quality from start to finish.
