This is an honest walk through what the science supports, what it does not, and what that means for allergic sleepers in famously damp New Zealand homes.
Why is your bed allergy headquarters?
Because it is the perfect habitat. Dust mites are microscopic creatures that feed on the skin cells we shed, and a bed supplies everything they need. Food from the sleeper, warmth from the sleeper, and humidity from the roughly cup of moisture we each release every night. Allergy organisations such as the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America name dust mite allergen among the leading indoor allergy triggers, and the allergen is not the mite itself but the waste it leaves behind, which builds up in pillows, duvets and mattress surfaces. If your congestion, itchy eyes or wheeze is worst on waking, the bed is the first suspect. The timing tell is worth trusting. Pollen peaks outdoors and in the day. Pet dander follows the pet. Symptoms that reliably greet you at 6am, ease once you are up and about, and return when you get into bed are pointing at the bed itself.
What do dust mites actually need to thrive?
Sustained humidity, above all. Mites do not drink. They absorb water from the air around them, and below roughly fifty percent relative humidity they struggle to survive and reproduce. Warmth and food they will always have in a bed. Humidity is the variable you can actually take away, and it is the lever every serious allergy strategy pulls. The same lever controls mould and mildew, which need damp conditions to establish at all. This is also why allergen-proof mattress and pillow encasements are a standard clinical recommendation. They work on the same logic from a different angle, separating you from the allergen reservoir. A drier bed and a barrier are complementary moves, not competing ones.
How does wool change the bed's microclimate?
By handling the moisture at its source. Wool fibre absorbs moisture vapour into its structure, commonly cited at up to around thirty percent of its own weight, without feeling damp, and releases it away from the bed through the day. The practical result is a sleep surface that stays dry through the night instead of accumulating the humidity mites and mould depend on. Synthetic fills do the opposite. Polyester and foam hold moisture at the surface, maintaining exactly the stable, humid microclimate that makes a bed hospitable. Same sleeper, same room, two very different habitats. Dryness carries a second benefit for irritated airways and skin. A dry bed is simply more comfortable to breathe and lie in. Anyone whose eczema flares in sweaty sheets, or whose nose blocks in a stuffy bed, is reacting partly to the microclimate itself, and that is the part wool changes directly.
The fibre itself is also a poor home. Wool's scaled keratin structure gives mites little to burrow into compared with loose synthetic batting, and the dryness does the rest.
The lanolin myth, since we should be honest
Much wool marketing claims lanolin, the natural grease in raw fleece, actively repels dust mites. We will not make that claim, for a simple reason. Properly scoured wool retains very little of its original lanolin, and ours is double-scoured at WoolWorks in Napier precisely so it arrives clean, residue-free and nearly scentless. The defensible mechanism is the humidity one, and it does not need the myth. It is worth knowing the difference, because a brand leaning on lanolin to sell you scoured wool is selling a story about a substance that was washed out. The same honesty applies in the other direction. Wool is not antibacterial magic or a self-cleaning surface. It is a fibre with unusually good moisture behaviour, and that single property, properly understood, explains almost everything wool does well in a bed.
What about damp homes and NZ humidity?
An honest limit belongs here. Wool buffers the microclimate of your bed, but it cannot dehumidify your house. Research on wool bedding in very humid conditions found that when ambient humidity is high enough, around the levels of an unventilated Wellington winter, no fibre's moisture handling can outrun the room. In a damp home, wool still keeps the bed surface drier than synthetics would, but the full fix pairs it with the basics. Ventilation, sun through the windows, and a dehumidifier in the worst months. Dry the room, and wool keeps the bed the driest thing in it.
Can you be allergic to wool itself?
Rarely, and less often than people think. Most wool discomfort is mechanical, coarse fibre ends prickling sensitive skin, which is irritation rather than allergy and does not arise from wool sealed inside a smooth cotton cover. True wool or lanolin allergy exists but is uncommon, and typically shows as reactions to any wool contact, jumpers included. Do dust mites live in wool bedding?
Mites can land on any surface, wool included. The difference is whether the environment lets them thrive. Is wool hypoallergenic?
