What Is Your Mattress Actually Made Of? A Look Inside Modern Beds

Most modern mattresses are built from petroleum based polyurethane foams, synthetic adhesives, polyester fabrics and chemical flame retardants, wrapped around steel springs or more foam. None of this is a secret, but little of it is on the label. This is a calm look at what is actually in there, what off-gassing means, what the research does and does not say, and what you can change without replacing your bed.

What is inside a modern mattress?

Layer by layer, a typical bed today contains more chemistry than most people expect. Comfort layers of polyurethane foam, including memory foam and most things called gel foam. Adhesives bonding those layers together. A polyester or blended fabric cover, sometimes with a vinyl or polyurethane waterproof coating. Chemical flame retardants, because the foam itself burns readily. And a support core of steel springs or denser foam.

Some of these materials do real work. Foam is how a bed contours, glue is how it holds together, and flame retardancy is a genuine safety requirement. The point is not that mattresses are secretly sinister. The point is that you spend a third of your life in full contact with a stack of materials you have probably never seen listed. Compare it with food. Every packet in your pantry carries a full ingredient list by law. The object you spend eight hours a night pressed against does not, and most of us have never thought to ask.

What is polyurethane foam?

A plastic. Specifically, a polymer made by reacting polyols and diisocyanates, both derived from fossil fuels, expanded with blowing agents and stabilised with additives. It has been the standard mattress fill since the 1960s because it is cheap, light and easy to shape into any feel from plush to firm.

Memory foam sounds like a different material, but the Environmental Working Group notes it is just another type of polyurethane foam, sometimes blended with a small percentage of soybean or castor oil. The marketing changes. The chemistry family does not. Gel infused, plant based, cooling, open cell. These describe modifications to polyurethane foam, not departures from it. Reading a mattress spec sheet gets much simpler once you know that almost every soft layer in the industry is the same base material wearing different adjectives.

What is off-gassing, really?

Foam manufacture leaves behind small amounts of unreacted chemicals and volatile by-products inside the material. As the foam decompresses and warms, those compounds evaporate into the air. That is off-gassing, and the smell of a new mattress is you noticing it. The release is strongest in the first days, which is why the standard advice is to unwrap a new bed and air it in a ventilated room before sleeping on it.

Two details matter for a bed specifically. Warmth increases the release, and a mattress with a sleeper on it is warm for eight hours a night. And a 2021 study of mattress emissions, cited by the MADE SAFE program, measured notable concentrations of compounds associated with eye, nose and throat irritation. The bed is not just another piece of furniture. It is the one your face rests on. Worth saying clearly, this is not a reason to panic about a bed you already own. An aired, certified mattress that has been in service for months has long passed its strongest release period. It is a reason to think about what sits at the surface, where contact actually happens.

Why does foam need flame retardants?

Because polyurethane is highly flammable. Firefighters have described foam furniture as solid fuel, and fire regulations quite reasonably require mattresses to resist ignition. The common industrial answer is chemical flame retardants applied to or mixed into the foam, and the specific chemicals used have changed repeatedly over the decades as earlier generations were phased out.

There is a natural counterpoint worth knowing. Wool is naturally flame resistant. The fibre chars rather than ignites, which is why wool has long been used in aviation and institutional bedding. A material that does not burn easily does not need to be treated so that it will not. This is one of the quiet arguments for natural fibre bedding generally. Several of the chemical additions in a synthetic bed exist to manage problems the synthetic materials themselves create.

Why is none of this on the label?

Because disclosure rules are thin. The Environmental Working Group points out that manufacturers are not required to disclose all the materials in a mattress, and specifically not which flame retardant is used. The tag tells you there is polyurethane foam inside. It does not tell you the additive package, the adhesive, or the treatment on the cover. For a product you will spend nearly three thousand hours a year against, that is a remarkable information gap. It also explains why certifications carry the weight they do. In the absence of full disclosure, an independent standard that tests the finished product is the closest thing a buyer has to an ingredient list.

Should you actually be worried?

Here is the measured version, because this topic attracts fear it does not always earn. For healthy adults sleeping on a certified, properly aired mattress, measured exposures generally sit below regulated thresholds, and off-gassing at those levels has not been shown to cause lasting harm. At the same time, research into long term, low level exposure is ongoing rather than settled, and some groups have reason for more caution, including pregnant people, babies and young children, whose breathing rates are higher, and anyone with chemical sensitivities or respiratory conditions. If that describes your household, the materials in the bedroom are worth the same attention you give the materials in the kitchen, and specific health questions belong with your doctor.

Worry is optional. Awareness is just sensible.

What can you actually do about it?

Four practical moves, in rising order of commitment. Air new foam products properly before use, in a ventilated room, for days rather than hours. Prefer certified materials, OEKO-TEX for fabrics, CertiPUR-US for foams, which meaningfully restrict what can be in them. Make your bedding natural, because sheets, protectors and duvets are cheap to change and sit closest to you. And change the boundary layer itself.

That last one is the structural fix. You cannot change what your mattress is made of, but you can change what you lie against. Does a wool topper stop off-gassing?
